1816 Gold Medal Award for British Officers studying Indian Languages at the Fort William College (Puddester- 800.2) Calcutta mint. This large impressive gold medal is believed to be one of only 22 known specimens according to Puddester, the award was the highest given to serving British Military officers in the East India Company who undertook the arduous task of learning the local dialects of their respective enclaves at the Calcutta college. This medal has an impressive design featuring a Pagoda and other important buildings as well as a sailing ship and palm trees, the medal has a nice light orange gold tinge to the fields. A very rare and historically important medal struck in gold.
