Description

1544. Henry VIII: (Au) Half-Sovereign (S 2294 ): Hammered Third Coinage. Tower mint. Obverse: King seated facing outward on the throne, crowned and fully robed holding orb and sceptre, Tudor rose below. Reverse: Crowned Royal Arms with lion and dragon supporters, ‘IHC AVTE TRANSI’ PER MED ILLE IBAT’. Although this coin has areas of weakness, the facial features of Henry, with his characteristic beard, are fully struck and clear.
